WebJan 17, 2011 · Anything that comes out of the exhaust ports has nothing to do with a leaky lower unit. If you see oily residue there, it is simply unburnt fuel. Sometimes this residue collect inside the exhaust tube and works its way down to the prop where it might get mistaken for a leak. Gear oil has a very distinct odour.... The oil hose is hooked up the engine and the clamp for the connection is in the rigged rigging tube which is a pain in the rear to undo. We use to remove the air box and pop the hose off the oil filter and purge it from that point.
