He took the plastic cap off ground off the paint welded studs to the damaged area then using a come along attached to the fifth wheel hitch he pulled it back into shape. A little paint and a new plastic cap good as new. As you pull on the hooks with straps to the tailgate tie downs it will straighten out... leave the angle on and bolt it to the rail and it will stop bending back. Thats the plan on mine.

Basic problem is that if the tailgate swings hard all the way open against the stops the stops in the hinges can bend slightly, which will then allow the tailgate to open a bit further and therefore making the stop rod liable to pull out.
