Web11 sept. 2005 · I just got some stainless steel Lycoming exhaust nuts from Aircraft Spruce for our IO-540 and have found out they can be picked up by a magnet. Is this correct? There was one nut on one of the studs when the engine came back from rebuild shop and a magnet will not pick it up. I was doing an annual inspection, and found the inside exhaust nut loose on #2 cylinder. When attempting to retorque it, it soon became clear that the stud was pulling out of the cylinder.

WebStainless is more brittle and has higher thermal expansion than carbon steel bolts. This leads to galling or "cold welding" of the threads. Meaning that after so many heat cycles the expansion effectively welds the bolt & nut together so they snap off when you remove them. I'd stick with grade 8 fasteners and anti-seize. Web23 ian. 2024 · Upon inspection it appears that the exhaust studs are due for replacement (rusted pretty badly). My plan was to chase out the threads with a tap as they seem pretty stiff.
